When you do not know when your next meal will be: not by choice
Some communities are living in extreme poverty where they do not know what their next meal will be. We still have a long way to go in preventing and relieving poverty. It is a hard life. The need for support is evident in Turkana County in Kenya and other areas in the world for instance Zimbabwe at this time. Some of the people have no means of generating any income. Some grandparents are having to look after their grandchildren who are now orphans as their parents passed on. Leap into Hope has been supporting communities living in poverty but we need your help to help more.
Due to the political and economic poverty rates rose to more than 72% for example in Zimbabwe, and left a fifth of the population in extreme poverty. Health, education, and other basic services have largely collapsed (World Vision, 2018). Zimbabwe’s economy remains a challenge to the community and individuals especially those in the rural communities. Many households are living in severe poverty unable to access basics such as food, health care and education. The country continues to face persistent levels of chronic malnutrition, which are exacerbated by food insecurity and deepening poverty. Independent economists say Zimbabwe’s unemployment rate is at over 95% (BBC, 2017). Children are among the most vulnerable groups to poverty. Teachers have been saying that many disadvantaged children in schools in Zimbabwe struggle to focus in class because they are hungry. Providing a nutritious daily meal helps to improve their concentration, school attendance and attainment.
Residential
Leap into Hope supports children and the elderly who live in residential homes too. Some of the conditions people live in are appalling. One residential home for the elderly that Leap into Hope visited had one functional cooking pot that volunteers were using to prepare meals for frail elderly residents. They would eat plain rice in the day and then one meal in the evening. Their rooms were filthy with clear evidence that some had not been cleaned for a long time. Their bathrooms left a lot to be desired. There is great need in children’s homes. They need a constant flow of the aid.
Would you consider helping people living in poverty. Please consider making monthly donations in aid to those living in poverty in deprived areas in the world. There is still a lot that we can do to tackle poverty.
